JOB TITLE: Director of Horticulture
DEPARTMENT: Horticulture
REPORTS TO: Executive Director
STATUS: Full-time; Exempt
PURPOSE OF POSITION: Serves as the horticulture spokesperson for the Garden. Leads the visioning and strategic planning process for the Horticulture Department, and collaborates with other senior mangers to integrate all departments’ strategic plans into one cohesive plan for the institution. Accepts primary responsibility for knowing benchmarks of excellence in the garden/horticulture profession and keeps the Garden’s horticulture programs at the forefront of all such benchmarks. Participates fully in all inter-departmental Garden initiatives related to: daily operations; temporary and permanent exhibits; K-12 and adult education programs; plant conservation; fund-raising; collections management; research; marketing and retail sales.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Based on best practices in the horticulture profession, especially as related to desert plants and arid land habitats, and as practiced at other major public gardens, writes standards for the display and care of the Garden’s plant exhibits and collections.
- Cooperates fully with the Director of Research to ensure that the necessary recording and curation of the living collection is achieved by all members of the horticulture department.
- Represents the Garden to the media, and actively develops and nurtures relationships with print, TV and on-line media providers of horticultural & gardening information.
- Writes articles for applied horticulture journals and other gardening magazines
- Develops and administers the annual operating budget for the horticulture department, and creates budgets for capital improvements as needed.
- Designs and implements major seasonal plant displays that build attendance.
- Collaborates on the design of new Garden exhibits, and generates schematic drawings for all major exhibit concepts.
- Assigns members of the horticulture department to teach public horticulture classes.
- Attends CACSS meetings on a regular basis, and attends or assigns horticulture staff to attend Native Plant Society meetings on a regular basis.
- Directly supervises and mentors the horticulture department staff members responsible for development and care of the Garden’s cactus, agave and aloe/other succulent collections.
- Expands the department’s retail program beyond the current spring/fall plant sales.
- Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Masters level degree (or equivalent experience) in Horticulture or related field
- Minimum of five years experience managing the horticultural operations of a public garden, or equivalent enterprise
- Proven skills in generating two and three dimensional schematic drawings of proposed exhibits
- Demonstrated comfort and experience in interacting with the media
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

A high level of client contact and creation of proposal and sales for further development and protection of accounts with assigned routes is expected. Responsibilities:
- Provide oversight of assigned crews and routes to ensure safety, quality, and efficiency of jobs.
- Recruit, hire, train, discipline work force as is necessary to achieve objectives.

Duties:
- Check crews in/out daily as appropriate.
- Maintain a visible scheduling process that is part of the overall process.
- Utilize a formal work order system for work orders or extras to eliminate missed bills and create inheritability.
- Provide estimates and proposal to clients in a fast responsive manner.
- See that time cards, billings, and payables coding are done as required by corporate policies.
- Ensure that extra proposal and sales are generated within the assigned routes to address necessary site requirements that will deliver the budgeted revenues at an adequate gross profit
- See that the assigned crews and fleet have a professional polished appearance.
- Order materials for upcoming work as dictated by the schedule.
- Establish an inspection routine to assure you can check all accounts on a routine regular basis for quality, efficiency, and contract compliance.
- Establish a client contact routine that creates client comfort and ensures that they know who is managing their property for regular or emergency situations.
- Respond to all client calls the day of the call, if after regular business hours within 24 hours. Emergency calls are to be handled immediately.
- Cooperate with other supervisors daily to address concerns of all DV clients.
- Ensure that all generated proposals have been followed up.
Skills Required:

Landscape Maintenance Foreman
POSITION SUMMARY
Maintain grounds of property using hand or power tools or equipment. Workers typically perform a variety of tasks, which may include any combination of the following: mowing, trimming, planting, watering, fertilizing, blowing, digging, raking, and sprinkler repair.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Operate powered equipment such as mowers, line trimmers, blowers, and hedge trimmers
- Mow and edge lawns, using power mowers and edgers
- Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing and removing thatch and triming and edging around flower beds, walks, and walls
